Rankings, Rankings Everywhere …

Langley Group CEO Mike Langley recently wrote an article about rankings for Chamber Executive magazine, the official publication of The American Chamber of Commerce Executives.  I worked with Mike at the Allegheny Conference on Community Development for three years, and I was proud when he called to interview me about the value of rankings in a successful public relations effort.

Anybody who has ever worked in PR on behalf of a region, a company or any organization playing on a competitive landscape knows that rankings are everywhere.  The trade press publishes them, the major papers and Web sites use them to keep content fresh, and consumers make decisions based who’s first and who’s worst.

As I said to Mike during our interview, no PR plan should be based on the rankings, but every PR plan should take the relevant rankings into account as they can be used to measure success, motivate change and to promote a brand — whether your brand is the City of Chicago or Coca-Cola.  With the permission of the kind folks at Chamber Executive, I’m posting Mike’s article here.  Just click the image of the front cover to the right to view the PDF.  I hope you find that it helps you as you think about how to use rankings — even the ones that aren’t entirely positive — to advance the goals of your clients.
